Democratic Encounters: Harare & Munich

For the past 30 years, Munich & Harare have shared a city partnership, which the project “Democratic Encounters: Harare & Munich” builds upon. As part of Artist in Residence Munich, Zimbabwean artists from First Floor Gallery Harare, supported by Lothringer 13 Halle curator Zakirah Rabaney, explore Munich’s art scene, investigating how artistic inquiry & cultural exchange nurture participatory practices as democratic encounters.
Miriro is an artist based in Harare working across installation, performance & video. Her practice critically examines the social & cultural dynamics of urban Zimbabwe, where global popular culture, tradition & everyday survival intersect. By collapsing distinctions between public & private, domestic & political, her work creates intimate yet critically engaged spaces that address questions of visibility & feminist agency.
Prudence Grace Nyahangare is a painter whose work is grounded in printmaking & photography. Through processes of reflection & recomposition, her work addresses cultural & relational otherness, as well as the search for connection & wholeness in scattered social relations. Her evocative paintings develop through several stages, beginning with photographs & everyday impressions, which she transforms into monotypes before reworking them on canvas.
gresham challenges narratives about Mbare, the neighborhood he grew up in, which is often (mis)represented through the perspectives of the state & the media. His satirical paintings move between figuration & abstraction, drawing on the restless energy of his community & its youth in a country where nearly 70% of the population is under 35. His practice reflects on how social realities are constructed & contested across different cultural & political contexts.
